Funeral Notice – Alan “Grandpa” Rundle
Posted on 24 March 2017
It is with great sadness that the 8th Tonbridge Scouts announce the passing of one of our longest supporters and former leaders Alan Rundle who passed away on the 6th March aged 85 years.
Alan first became involved with the Scout Troop in Hildenborough as an Assistant Scout Leader in late 1985. For around 15 years he was a very loyal and supportive leader to many young people of Hildenborough. Once he retired from a leadership role Alan then spent a number of years serving on the group executive committee working tirelessly behind the scenes ensuring the Scouts were in a good position into the future.
During his time as a leader Alan became affectionately known as “Grandpa” by the Scouts and was seen as the “elder statesman” for the Troop. Scores of Scouts will have experienced Alan teaching them how to use axes, saws, gas lamps and stoves. Alan attended many camps including several at Broadstone, in Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, the Lake District and County Durham and also supported a Challenge in Cornwall. On camp Alan always played a key, but un-glamorous support role looking after the “Central” area which basically meant he helped keep the activity leaders fed and watered and ensured that there was always enough drinking water on site and clean chemical toilets – a role he performed superbly helping the leadership team to deliver a number of highly successful camps. Alan will be remembered for his enthusiasm and dedication to the Scout movmment.
Alan’s funeral will take place at Tunbridge Wells Crematorium on Wednesday 29th March at 11.30am and afterwards at the Flying Dutchman in Hildenborough.
The family have requested no flowers. Instead, as Alan was such an ardent supporter of the Scout movement they have requested donations to the 8th Tonbridge (Hildenborough) Scout Group [Reg charity number 303464].
