Cubs Coppice Westwood

Date: 20th Nov 2017 Author: Cubsection

On Saturday 18th November the Hildenborough Wolf Cubs and their leaders joined the Hildenborough Conversation Group at Westwood to take part in the annual coppicing of the woodland. The Cubs learned about the coppicing process, how to use the tools (including loppers and saws) sensibly and why their efforts make such a difference to the local environment. The Cubs then went on to chop down trees that will be used to make bean poles and fences, while sawing up larger logs to make charcoal. This is then bagged up and will be sold by the Cubs at next years AGM! For lunch, the Cubs prepared and whittled their own sausage and damper sticks and then cooked their food over the red hot embers of the fire. We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Lynne and Peter Flower and her team for having us and for organising such and enjoyable and interesting day.
